The Night Vision Spot: L3Harris M914A PVS-14 09/18/21

 The M914A PVS-14

The M914A is a factory L3Harris manufactured version of the PVS-14 monocular device which has seen easily the most extensive military use of any night vision device. The PVS14 is the standard issue US service night vision device. Its versatility makes it a common choice for Law Enforcement as well. PVS-14’s can be mounted on helmets for hands-free use, behind weapon optics, or simply as a handheld device. As a monocular, the PVS-14 provides Gen3 night vision aid to one of the operator’s eyes, leaving the other to retain its natural night-adapted vision. This is important when changing light conditions in the field cause the user to go back and forth between aided and un-aided vision. Military and Law Enforcement operators need the ability to instantly switch between night vision and white light as the situation develops.
The main, and only, difference between the M914A and a traditional PVS-14 is that the M914A is a high FOM tube with a guaranteed 2376+ FOM rating, meaning the tube used for the goggle is of the same clarity and quality as the ones used in the significantly more expensive dual tube devices. Weight is the same as a traditional PVS-14 at about 12.4 ounces for the unit. Being effectively a very nice PVS-14, it uses all the same accessories and modifications that a PVS-14 can accept is the end user is so inclined to do such.
The price tag on this model is right at $4,999.00, which is $1-2,000 more than a regular PVS-14, depending on which manufacturer or sub-model you compare it to. The PVS-14 as a whole is the most entry level device you can get in the market of military grade goggles as it is the longest serving unit that is still continuously manufactured with constant aftermarket support. It is what most civilian users start off with, and many law enforcement agencies buy if they have the budget as they are typically up to or exceeding $7,000 cheaper than the superior and more advanced binocular devices made by L3 and others.
