The Night Vision Spot: L3Harris CNVD-LR UF WP 09/09/21
The CNVD-LR by L3Harris is a commercial version of the military adopted AN/PVS-24 specifically designed for long range applications. The CNVD stands for Clip-On Night Vision Device, meaning it is intended to be mounted in front of a magnified optic, whether that be a scope for shooting or a high powered optic used for long range range finding, like a spotter scope. This particular version is the LR, or Long Range, intended to be used at extended distances, particularly optimized for use in front of 8x to 12x magnified optics. But, on clear nights, this device has been successfully used to see human movement with a 14x optics out to 1,800 meters which is approximately 5,905 feet, or over a mile. However, being able to distinguish whether or not they are friendly or foe has been successful only out to about 450 meters, with facial recognition out to 120-130 meters during non operational deployment.
The tube itself is an L3Harris tube with a 2,376 minimum FOM. The most commonly available and most modern versions are white phosphor and unfilmed which is exactly what you would want. This basically means the sight picture is clear, hence the no film over the lens, and the white phosphor meaning the filter color is white, which allows a significantly higher amount of the surroundings to be more comfortably visible. Traditionally, night vision is green like you see in movies, which you could imagine would be harder to see well through with everything being green and black. White and black is much easier to use.
Clip on devices have to be capable of maintaining the same zero, or point of impact that a rifle optic is zeroed to, through the device, with a consistent change in point of impact. This, combined with having to be incredibly durable for military applications and capable of being abused though recoil, makes these particularly expensive. It is approximately $10,000 for dual tube night vision goggles, but this device is about $11,135 for one large tube, which is a pretty hefty price. However, this is a very useful device for any type of night time shooting or security, which it is often used for in the military. On the civilian side, it is also very useful if you do any form of night time hunting. Coming in at 1.9 pounds, it is very lightweight for its class and certainly has its uses.
