The Night Vision Spot: L3Harris BNVD PVS-1531 08/29/21
The PVS-1531 BNVD
The PVS-1531s are binocular night vision goggles manufactures by L3Harris Technologies. They are very similar to the AN/PVS-31As that the previous post was about. They are effectively the same device with minor changes to reduce their cost as compared to the 31A devices. They were done under contract for certain military units who wished for specific changes to suite their mission needs better than the 31As.
The primary changes are the inclusion of an infrared illuminator for allowing the user to generate their own infrared light when the ambient light is too dim to effectively see. This is important because these devices aren't entirely magic as they are really just taking advantage of the existing light, so they don't work in complete darkness, unless there is an illuminator which will output light to use. This works exactly the same as turning on the lights in the dark so you can see, just with infrared rather than visible light.
The next major change is that the external power connector is moved from being perpendicular to the mount to more of a rearward position so that it doesn't interfere with the right tube when articulating the tube. This was the last major change to the design from the 31A model. Other than these two changes, the only discernable difference between the two is the heavier weight of the 1531s due to the inclusion of the illuminator. Other than that, they have the exact same 18mm MX-11769 Variable Gain tubes and have the same sight picture when in use.
These can be bought commercially as of recently as they were also released alongside the AN/PVS-31As on the civilian market through the same procurement channels. The cost is noticeably cheaper, being sold at $10,000 for the goggles only with military spec1792 FOM tubes, $10,600 for the goggles and the kit with the same military spec tubes, or as a full kit with the higher FOM 2376+ tubes of the PVS-31As for $11,400, which is still cheaper than the $13,700 cost for the same 2376+ tube goggle set of 31As.
Of note is the strength of these goggles. The PVS-1531 is stronger than the AN/PVS-31As. The 31As are very lightweight at only 0.99 pounds with the battery. Their housing isn't the strongest, which allows the hinge to break causing them to have to be sent back to the manufacturer. The 1531s are 1.188 pounds with the battery, which allows them to be a but stronger overall. Regardless of these minor weight differences, either goggle will be highly efficient in use, whatever that purpose that may be.
